# Naming rules

> Rules for table, column, project, and workspace names.

## Tables and columns

Table and column names must:

* Use only lowercase letters `a`–`z`, digits `0`–`9`, and underscores `_`
* Start with a letter or an underscore
* Be 1 to 63 characters long

In addition:

* Table names can't start with `proj_`. The prefix is reserved.
* Column names can't be `id` or `created_at`. Every table already has them.
* Names are unique within their scope: one table name per project, one column name per table.

The rule as a regular expression:

  When you describe columns in plain language, Claude converts names for you. "Last contacted" becomes `last_contacted`.

## Projects

| Field | Rule |
| - | - |
| Name | 1 to 80 characters. Any characters are allowed. Leading and trailing spaces are trimmed, and repeated spaces are collapsed. |
| Description | Optional, up to 200 characters, with the same space handling |

Project names don't have to be unique. Tools identify projects by id.

## Workspaces

Workspace names are 1 to 80 characters, with the same space handling as project names.
